KAYIN STATE – THE BEAUTY OF THE SUBLIME
By Birgit Neiser
Starting in Yangon it takes a day driving at a leisurely pace (anything else is either not possible or ill-advised on the roads of Myanmar anyway) to reach Hpa An in Kayin State. We drive through towns like Bago where you can stop for the Shwemawdaw Pagoda (114m), which is even taller than the celebrated Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon (98m). We also pass the quiet provincial town of Thaton and, last but not least, the town of Kyaikto – famous for the gravity-defying Golden Rock; all these towns, however, we are saving for the return leg.
